    Too much “ Presentism”
I’m interested in the history but completely turned off by the guilt induced scolding of the past by present day standards..

    Byeeee
The poorly veiled pro illegal immigration bias on the day of the presidential inauguration was the last straw. It seems to have been a planned “protest” podcast day for several leftist history podcasters. Well gentlemen we have lots of other options. So go on your merry way to your leftist utopia of blue sky. I have cancelled my subscription and am done with Jamie.

    Great narrative
Great podcast with excellent narratives however extremely annoying that we only get 15-20 minute episodes every month

    Pay only now?
Fascinating podcast, I wonder if they are truly over now. I just binged them in the last few months but if he is still making them are they pay only?

Thank you Jamie. This has been a most interesting lesson in American History. The stuff I never learned in school is presented in a very understandable way. It’s amazing to see how we got where we are and insight to where we are headed.

    A Brit Doing US History?
Jamie is an excellent podcaster and researcher. He also has a fun Twitter feed. A History of the United States is an excellent podcast. Do you remember the American history you learned in school? Basically, Step 1: Jamestown Sept 2: ??? Step 3: Civil WAAARRRRRR!!!! Well Mr. Redfern will fill you in on all the exciting things that happened in the British colonies that eventually threw off the chains of monarchy and became the first truly free people. He's still in the colonial era and I love each episode. He's doing a great job describing the various American Indian groups that make up our great country too!

Speedy recovery to you, Jaime. Sending you the best vibes from the US. Thank you for this podcast. Wishing you all the best in getting better soon!

    Amazing show. Love Jamie!!
I love how much detail he goes into. And he enjoys talking about all the details. I have been enjoying his style of narration almost as much as the history.

    I love Jamie Redfern!
I found his podcast on the Arab Spring several years ago and listened to each episode twice! Since then I have listened to almost all of his work and I find it quite enjoyable. I have a unit that I teach about the excavation of Jamestown and my students listen to a few of the early episodes looking for connections and they love it too!

    Great Details
I just found this podcast and after 20 episodes I can say have thoroughly enjoyed Jamie’s storytelling style and attention to details. This podcast truly is worth your time and attention if you love American history but want a view from treetop level rather than 30,000 ft. Thanks Jamie.

    Hooked
Was searching for a podcast on Jamestown (which is where this begins) and got hooked — 33 episodes in 4 days. Clear stories, fun and digestible details, great podcast.

    So good
Great history with unexpected philosophical truths snuck in when you least expect it. “When you’re wearing rose-colored glasses all the red flags just look like flags.” Nice one mate.

    Hard to Understand Narrator’s Dialogue
The context of the tapes is very informative when I can get enough words to figure out the jist of what is being said. BUT, the narrator’s deep British accent with word pronunciation very different than most American dialogue, and the lightning speed at which the story is delivered, I makes for a VERY HARD TIME understanding what is being said. I LOVE American History and I really want to listen to the stories being told, but it’s painfully hard to understand which takes all the joy (and the point) out of listening.

Opinionated & Revisionist English view on USA
A podcast on American history by an Englishman would be more palpable if the host wasn’t busy trying—and failing—to hide his personal agenda, which can be summed up as distain for all things America. Listeners are reminded repeatedly he is not American, and therefore holds no connection to the things about which he speaks. He finds obscure quotes to support his sour grapes, English-informed opinions that regularly downplay American concepts, heroes, founding documents, and events. This is a common English perspective of the United States, dressed as objective history. To be fair, the host does his research and unearths some interesting tidbits here and there; but this is tempered by glaring details from history which he conveniently (read: purposely) omits. The host’s voice is fine, his diction excellent, and his sequence of events quite well done (hence the second of this two-star review). However, asking the American the listener to justify these as reason continued listening is a bridge too far. Listening to this podcast and taking it seriously makes about as much sense as listening to a podcast on the history of the New York Yankees as told by a fan of the Boston Red Sox.

This one grows on you... But once it does it fascinates.

    The Details
Jamie gives enormous attention to detail. He offers many primary sources and is sure to explain the bias behind them. Along side the many other sources that he carefully picks apart and describes the inconsistencies among them if any. This is one of the most interesting history podcast I’ve listened to.

    Insightful and Truly Entertaining
I just found this podcast today, and have been binging the entire day. I am just finishing General Bacon episode today. I truly enjoy the topics and have learned in greater detail things that I did not know existed surrounding Jamestown in particular. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this journey and looking forward to being up to date on episodes....

All the subjects you've committed to are presented with respect and insight.
As such, you have earned my trust and I consider you to be in the top 1% of Podcasters. I love History and was pleasantly surprised to hear your lilting Mancunian voice over on "Arab Spring: a History". I am deeply impressed by your breadth of knowledge and your pronunciation of Pacific Northwest Peoples' names. You have obviously taken time and great care to pronunce names as a native speaker would which is only right. Thank you for all the sweet sweet hours of brain food!

    Decent but not great
I listen to a lot of history podcasts, and while I listen to every episode of this one I often feel somewhat unsatisfied by it. It probably has a lot to do with the length - the shows aren’t long enough to get into a story, and I’m often just trying to remember details about where the last one left off. The many mispronunciations are also pretty off putting. But I do love the detail, and the greater emphasis on the British side of things than you usually get with American history.

    Appreciative In Pittstown, New Jersey
One of my favorite history podcasts and I usually make it my first pick to listen to when I download the day’s feed. Well researched and a good look at U S history with a beefed-up vantage from wider European History. Especially liked today’s installment on the Repeal of the Stamp Act and William Pitt’s “speech of a lifetime.” It made him so popular out here in the colonies that here in Hunterdon County, New Jersey a local village was renamed “Pitt’s-Town” by 1768, and it remains so to this date. (I realize there is a city somewhere named Pittsburgh, but I understand that was named in his honor after the Seven Years War.)
  • Sold Out for God
    Love it!!
Great job, I like to multi-source historical information before putting too much stock into it, from what I have been able to find this show has always been spot on in factual content (always giving a disclaimer when there are differing thoughts/info). My Very ADD brain loves how this show is put together. Side note in the occasional mispronunciation-the Haters need to get over themselves! We all mispronounce words all the time! Especially considering it is almost always a word in a different language/cultural pronunciation. Great job keep up the good work.

    Love it
I’m a history nerd and this helps me to keep learning! Am I weird for listening to this while working out!?
  • JJRROMI
    I’m outta here!
Yes he has the detail that listeners love. But his continuing slaughter of Indian names is intolerable. There have to be references he could use. Or ask for help from an American! Clearly he can’t be bothered. Neither can I any more. Ya taaaa!

    Much can be learned
This podcast was excellent. As a major history buff, I learned a lot. Most importantly, though I’d been previously peripherally aware of this, the United States seems to have come around due in significant part due to the constant European wars, specifically the true First World War we know of as the French and Indian War. Great job and thanks.

    Good
I’m a fan of American history. I enjoy studying the colonial period and hearing all sorts of information from various people, not just one. I learned a great deal from this podcast. It’s well researched and unbiased.

    Just like everybody rose
I was so excited to hear a factual history of the Untied States. Unfortunately ten seconds into downloading I read your synopsis and you bashed FOX right off the bat. I’m not saying Foxnews isn’t without its biases, but to point them out solely without mentioning the absolute travesty which is CNN ABC CBS MSNBC NBC mainstream liars shows your bias. So I removed your podcast without ever hearing a word. GOODBYE

    Interesting Content, some negatives
He goes into good depth, but the episodes are pretty short and sometimes hop around. Also, there are times where he will quote a book for the entire episode. I would rather my podcasts not be someone just reading a book excerpt to me.
  • jhbailey1956
    This show fits the bill!
We are in desperate need of civics and history education that sharpen minds dulled by silly reality shows and FOX. Not just more history podcasts— but good ones from scholars who understand the big picture as well as the details of a battle or a movement and can make it interesting. If we can’t pull the American mind out of Honey Boo Boo and Kardashianville, these oligarchs & crooked politicians are going to eat us alive. So far, I am putting this young man in the group of history podcasters who are doing a five star job, a group which includes the number the wonderful Civil War show by Rich and Tracy of Colorado. If I were Jamie, I’d make it maybe 10 minutes longer.

    Great history lesson
This is a very detailed and enjoyable podcast. Half way through and I have already learned so much history.

    Great show!
Great detail. Thank you Jamie for doing this. Enjoy the history.

    Waste of time
I tried to give this a chance but it is like listening to someone read a book that they don’t like and they. don’t know how to pronounce a lot of the words. It’s hard to tell if he even understands what he is telling us.
  • Brownie Browns
    Jolly good.
Very informative and entertaining. When you think you knew as much as you could about the history of America, this guy lets you know that you still have quite a bit of learning to do. Well done for a person with no sentimental attachment to the U.S.

A History of the United States
Jamie is a witty and excellent story teller and I have enjoyed the work from beginning to end while painting my house. He made time pass so quickly and I’ve learned more than I ever imagined. Mick Leonard, Kansas City, Missouri.

    Stopped
I stopped listening to this podcast due to production quality. There are roughly 2-3 minutes devoted to ads or ways to support the show. I enjoyed Jamie’s other podcasts very much but his microphone sounds awful in this one and it’s not worth listening to said ads/promos and then poor quality sound.

    Super comprehensive
I love listening to this in the morning while I’m making breakfast. I enjoy his sense of humor, and detail that he puts into the series. Sometimes it is really hard to follow though because it almost feels like it’s all over the place. I would like him to do an overview and review a little more often before switching between colonies, but this still gets 5 stars. Mainly because out of nowhere he said that he was doing a full comprehensive Native American history as well for season 2!! Very excited

    A gem of a show
As he is on his fourth podcast serries, Jamie has really hit his stride. He has retained the enthusiasm of youth but added in better research methodology and a storyteller's eye for writing. Jamie is good people, and this show is a gem. definitely worth a listen.

American History by a Great Brit
A Brit relating American history? After overcoming skepticism, I’m now a huge fan and plan on listening again to them all. Enjoy his delivery style and well-researched presentations. English perspective sheds a slightly different light on many of his subjects than I have heard before; for example, I never thought of Ben Franklin as old by the time of the American Revolution. This North Carolinian suggests an episode on John Lawson which involves exploration, an English-American, Iroquois American Indians, surveying, trading, Moravians, and intrigue. Keep up the podcast!
  • Kathleeneleanor
    Great!!
Really enjoying this podcast. I am loving everything I am learning about American history from what seems like a pretty unbiased historian which I really like. He gives some interesting details and has a present voice to listen too. Thanks Jamie for doing this!

Wonderful 10,000 foot view of American history
Though his pronunciation of the names of American Indians and places in America is a bit off (RoanokE made me smirk), this is a fantastic overview of American history. I’m currently teaching my children at home and am really enjoying this overview for my own sake.
  • Just1Minute
    Awesome!
Found many of my ancestors here in America since 1600’s. This podcast is filling in their stories and expanding avenues to explore by your well researched, humorously and articulately delivered narratives. A million “thank you’s”! I agree with many others, Jamie is terrific! One, thing though, he would benefit from an American consultant on pronunciation of certain American names. It is fun to hear how an Englishman tackles some of the tricky native names, but occasionally confusing. I do hope, Jamie, you are able to visit here in the U.S. extensively in the future. It would be especially nice if there was an event where your fans could meet you. Washington, D.C. with its free museums would be a good place to start.
  • Bear Suit
Please get some help with pronunciation
The information in the podcast is fascinating, but... the pronunciation of American Indian names is not great. I would be willing to assist if need be. Like “CHAIR uh kee “ instead of “cher O kee”

    A waste of my time
The episodes are short and don’t provide enough substance. The efforts at humor are wasted. Podcaster provides too much information on methodology. I’m unsubscribing.
