Amy Should Be Forty

In October 1989, a 10-year old girl went missing after school in a Cleveland suburb. The kidnapping and murder of Amy Mihaljevic is one of the area's most high-profile cases ever. And it's been 30 years since she was killed. On the anniversary of her disappearance, we look at the investigation and how new evidence could shed light on this cold case. "Amy Should Be Forty" is 5-part podcast from WKYC in Cleveland and VAULT Studios.

    Odd
I’ve listened to the entire series but I’ll admit I didn’t love it. The host/narrator sounds fake and insincere. There are times, I feel like he had just told what he thought was the funniest joke ever.

    Boo James Renner
Less than five minutes into episode one I realized James Renner plays a role in this podcast. Not a fan of people who make up conspiracies and shares them as truths.

    We’ll done…..
Did a great job at hitting all the bases of the case while keeping it interesting.

Great case review! Hope it sparks something!
Thank you for bringing light to this case… crazy that Renner may have seen the actual abductor! So sketchy! Let’s get on that DNA! Thanks again!

    Amy should be forty.
I can not even begin to understand her Mother’s and family’s pain. Thank goodness for those who did not give up on you and your search 💔

    Host is awful
The host is so out of tune with the content of the podcast. He sounds strangely cheery through much of the podcast, and when he attempts for a serious tone he sounds fake, and comes across as completely cheesy. Lots of “dramatic” filler as well. Do not recommend.

    Save our kids
I remember this murder. I grew up in Cleveland. I remember this one vividly.

    Is this really about Amy?
Are you interested in hearing about James Renner’s childhood? If so, this podcast is for you. This could’ve been a great podcast. However, Renner’s ego seems to never let it be just about the victim.

    Well done
I really enjoyed hearing Amy’s story. The pod was done well. It hit on all cylinders for me, given that I was also 10 in 1989 in the Midwest and it isn’t hard to imagine Amy’s life or the circumstances leading to her death. I hope someday her family gets closure.

    Fantastic listen
I just recently came across this one and I really love how well out together and researched this podcast is. The narrator does a great job telling her story and hopefully her family will have peace.

    Interesting but host ruins it
I really wanted to keep listening to this because I did want to know more about Amy’s case, but I couldn’t finish episode 3 because the host has this weirdly cheerful and fake tone that ruins it. He sounds like a narrator for like American Idol or some reality show, with exaggerated tones; it’s really an odd choice considering the topic.

    I hate James Renner
Sorry- couldn’t listen to this- I am so sick of James Renner. He is such a pompous ass- I’m out.

    Engaging!
Great true crime podcast with well researched and factual information. I also enjoy that there is no useless banter and the narrator knows how to hold an audience.

    Excellent
Excellent podcast! I think the thing that stands out to me the most in this case is that Amy would not have gone with someone she did not know. She was a smart girl! She knew the person the person she was meeting.

    Amy
I think the narrator was wonderful in the way he verbalize things. Very informative even though I read the Renner book. Well done podcast.

    Well done
    Excellent production. Highly recommend it.

    Not About Amy
Disappointing. This podcast is mainly about James Renner, the author of a book about Amy’s murder. Also, host is very cheerful. Hard to listen to.

    Loved it!
    Very well done. Great job

    Couldn’t finish this
I tried to listen to this podcast twice months apart. The narrator is incredibly upbeat for the subject matter, and there is too much joking banter. As a TV journalist myself it’s hard to listen to.

    Don’t be fooled
This podcast isn’t about Amy. once again James Renner makes it all about himself.

    No rambling - whew!
Nice and tight storytelling of a very familiar case. Great job!

    I love this podcast

    Just wish it was longer!
Such a good podcast- editing and narration is on point. Horrific, but interesting story, I only wish the series was longer!

    My favorite podcast!!!!!

    Good, but short
It’s an interesting podcast but it’s pretty short.
  • carlgood1
producer lacks ambition to make this what it should have been
Overly buoyant narrator leads us to toothless and unsatisfying shrug of the shoulders ending. No names of suspects used despite them being abundantly clear in the public record - and this podcast is maybe the only place on the interwebs where Renner doesnt tell people it was most likely Dean Runkle. Weak - and ending with that sad sack quote from the cop was just awful editing. Last taste in our mouths shouldn’t be world weary helpless throwing up of the hands. Gross.

Good if you are a true crime junkie looking for new podcasts
I’ve binged almost all true crime pods and I enjoyed listening to this. It’s really good until the last episode. I get that it’s not solved but it was really anticlimactic.

    Skip the prologue
For some reason, the narrator gives up half a dozen plot points in the story in the opening prologue. So unnecessary. Skip the prologue. The rest of the podcast is great. Gripping, tragic, well-produced. I wish it went longer. The ending is genuinely touching. 5 stars.
  • Monty9842
    Ugh
I’ve followed this case for years. This was very “produced” and light on case details, rather focusing far too much on James’ life. And the narrator Andrew...UGH...far too upbeat for a murder podcast.
  • jdub_unclebuck
Meh. It’s okay. But goes nowhere
These 5 episodes could have been condensed into two-maybe even one-and been less repetitive. The story could be interesting but basically it’s an unsolved case that’s going nowhere and you don’t learn much about. It wasn’t bad.....but what’s to reccommend?
  • Timbo Gee
    Well done. Would recommend.
A tragic and terrifying story, well told and well produced.

    Great Podcast
Great series, in very easily digestible chunks. Please post an update if they test those hairs! 5 stars. RIP Amy! 😇 hopefully this Season of Justice will put your killer(s) behind bars!

    Missed opportunity
This podcast provided a cursory review of a crime alongside very little detail/facts and bunch of imaginary images and speculation. There is zero effort made to investigate the crime, find new information or even just a new view. This barely qualifies as exposure. All together the series is a little over an hour, most of it spent on nothing. There was an opportunity to help this case, but instead this just felt like “entertainment” (and poorly done entertaining at that). In a genre saturated with thoroughly investigated and produced content, this is a miss. My condolences to Amy’s family on your loss.

The host sounds like a wannabe ABC News reporter
I listened to the series and the story was interesting and I learned a lot. BUT. The hosts sucked. It sounded like the main guy, not James, really wants a job with ABC news. The way they presented it sounded like Killing on the Cape which was not good. It’s a quick listen if you can ignore the guys hosting the podcast.

    Narration
I think it was well done and necessary story. I witnessed this important unsolved crime as I grew up near bay in river. But personally i think the narrator sounded too polished and happy for my taste. I would have preferred him to play it down a bit/ more down to earth. I can only assume he is a local television personality and it was too much with the subject matter. I think they need to test that DNA like yesterday...

    Renner? No Thanks
Why have this knob on a great podcast? He’ll make everything about himself. I never made it out of the first podcast. He’s a creepy dude.
  • C DUB99
    Exceptionally well done!
Extensive work into the biggest local mystery of my lifetime. Outstanding work by all involved.
  • JHud9876
Short but hits close to home
Amy was only two years older than me. I can imagine myself in her shoes. Sad the whole pod cast is less than 2 hours long.
  • Ms.LadyErin
    I wanted to like it...
I just can’t... Is this a podcast about Amy or James Renner? I’m 3 episodes in and it honestly seems more about Renner’s childhood and all these insane claims he’s making. No facts, no corroboration, just nonsense. Please, don’t waste your time. Deleted from library and unsubscribed!!

Very interesting podcast about a sensitive and disturbing topic. Really well done.

This was a captivating listen - it almost made me late for work! Keep them coming. Great production value. I knew about the case as child, but this gave new insight and perspective.

    James Renner...why?
This podcast does a good job telling Amy’s story but the James Renner storyline kills it for me. When he claims the man that chased him through the park was Amy’s killer, I realized this is all about his ego and not really about telling Amy’s story. Sad.
  • eeveel
    Renner? No Thanks.
The moment when James Renner says he thinks the guy who almost succeeded in abducting him could be the same guy who took Amy is a perfect example of Renner's need to make almost any and every thing about him. It's such a challenge to endure this man without a hard eyeroll. Other than the unfortunate airtime given to Mr. Uber Ego himself, the rest of the content was insightful, heartbreaking and necessary. It's high time this case is solved. Too bad Renner almost stripped this podcast of all credibility. Any project that has to do with him is a red flag for most people well-versed in the True Crime community, especially among those who are CLE locals.

    James Renner
You lost me when he came on. You, Nic and Bill Huffman should really check him out. Listen to podcast 107 degrees and find out what he really does. Intimidation, stalking, playing fast and loose with the truth. I don’t believe one word he says.
  • TFWilmette
    Thorough and Gripping
Fantastic story with actual footage from WKYC from 1989 and later. Very well done, Vault Studios! Enjoy your work

    James Renner is a wackjob
Excited for this podcast until James Renner came up. Renner is a complete wack job and total joke in the true crime community, known for misconstruing/inventing facts and publically naming “suspects” with no credible supporting evidence, effectively ruining people’s lives. I don’t know how anyone could take him seriously after claiming Maura Murray is a sociopath that is still alive and probably leading a second life using her own social security number... Edit: I gave it a chance and wow, these producers should be ashamed of themselves. Giving Renner a platform to spread his lies and wild made up theories, for example telling an unverified story of a man that tried to kidnap HIM as a child and saying that that man is probably who killed Amy is wildly irresponsible. Calling Renner your fact checker is insane when he’s the one feeding you the facts. No journalistic integrity.

    Well done
An interesting case that has been well researched. Andrew Horansky is a great narrator and guides the listener through both the technical and emotional aspects of the case.
  • professor ditchdigger
    Wow! Impressed.......
Andrew Horansky and his team hit a grand slam home run! Living in Cleveland and hearing about this for years, I can’t believe how much I missed until I got the facts from this podcast. Great production value also.
